Food for creativity: tyrosine promotes deep thinking
Key Finding
L-tyrosine (2g) acutely enhanced creative and convergent thinking abilities in healthy adults.
Plain-English Summary
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effects of L-tyrosine on creative thinking in 32 healthy adults. Participants received either 2 grams of tyrosine or placebo before cognitive testing.
Results showed that tyrosine supplementation significantly enhanced deep, creative thinking. Participants in the tyrosine group performed better on convergent thinking tasks, which involve finding single optimal solutions to problems. Effects were observed approximately 60-90 minutes after ingestion.
Tyrosine is a precursor to dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine - neurotransmitters critical for cognitive flexibility, working memory, and executive function. The study suggests that by increasing catecholamine synthesis, tyrosine enhances cognitive control processes necessary for creative problem-solving. Effects may be particularly beneficial during stress or cognitive demand when neurotransmitter depletion can occur. Tyrosine was well-tolerated with no adverse effects.
