Huperzine-A

Huperzine-A is a potent alkaloid derived from Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata). It powerfully inhibits acetylcholinesterase, boosting acetylcholine levels in the brain to enhance memory, learning, and neuroprotection - particularly studied for age-related cognitive decline.

What is Huperzine-A?

Huperzine-A is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alkaloid extracted from the Chinese club moss Huperzia serrata (Qian Ceng Ta), a plant used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries to treat fever, inflammation, and memory disorders.

How to take it

  • Typical dose: 50–200 mcg per day (note: micrograms, not milligrams)
  • For cognitive enhancement: 50–100 mcg once or twice daily
  • For age-related decline: 200–400 mcg per day, split into two doses (used in clinical studies)
  • Cycling: Recommended to cycle 2–4 weeks on, 1 week off, as it has a long half-life and can accumulate
  • With choline: Best combined with a choline source (Alpha-GPC or Citicoline) to provide substrate for the increased acetylcholine production

Watch out for

  • Side effects: Cholinergic side effects at higher doses: nausea, diarrhoea, sweating, blurred vision, muscle twitching, and increased salivation.
  • Drug interactions: Do NOT combine with prescription cholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine) or anticholinergic medications. May...
  • Heart rate: May slow heart rate (bradycardia) - use with caution if you have a pre-existing cardiac condition.
  • Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to lack of safety data.
  • Cycling required: Due to its long half-life, regular breaks are important to prevent accumulation and cholinergic overload.

The science, if you're curious.

  • Huperzine-A reversibly and selectively inhibits AChE, the enzyme that degrades acetylcholine, thereby increasing acetylcholine availability at synapses for...
  • It acts as a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, protecting neurons from glutamate-induced excitotoxicity - a major contributor to neurodegeneration.
  • Huperzine-A has intrinsic antioxidant properties that protect brain cells from oxidative damage and reduce lipid peroxidation.
  • May promote NGF expression, supporting neuronal survival, growth, and synaptic maintenance.

Where to find it

  • Chinese club moss: Huperzia serrata is the natural source, though the plant yields very small quantities
  • Standardised extracts: Most supplements provide purified or semi-synthetic Huperzine-A standardised to specific potencies
  • Supplements: Available as capsules and tablets, typically in 50 mcg, 100 mcg, or 200 mcg doses
  • Nootropic stacks: Frequently included in pre-formulated memory and cognitive enhancement products
